Noog Weekly #2 — Hayden Coffman, MLW wrestling, and Mother's Day this weekend
The dogwoods on the North Shore are dropping petals everywhere now, which means we're officially past peak bloom and into the thick of spring.
This weekend is lighter than last week's lineup — no Wailers or Cinco crawls — but Songbirds has a solid acoustic set and there's at least one wrestling riot at The Signal if that's your speed. Mother's Day is Sunday, so brunch reservations are already tight.
Friday, May 8
Hayden Coffman — Songbirds, Mapleshade Ave, North Chattanooga
Small room, good acoustics. Coffman's playing a stripped-down country set that's earned him a following in the region. Songbirds is an easy venue — grab a beer in the lobby, the room holds maybe 100, and you won't need binoculars. Info
Saturday, May 9
MLW: Major League Wrestling TV Taping — The Signal, 21 Choo Choo Ave, Southside
Full disclosure: this is loud, sweaty, and niche. MLW is an indie wrestling promotion that tapes TV at mid-size venues across the country, and The Signal's room works surprisingly well for it. If you've never been to a live wrestling show, this is the one to try — the crowd is half the show. Tickets
Sunday, May 10
Golden Gay's Mother's Day Brunch — 701 Hooker Rd, Red Bank, 10 AM
Drag brunch for Mother's Day. The Golden Gays are a touring troupe, and this is a seated brunch with a show. Seats are limited and the early sessions are already close to full. Reservations
Mother's Day Celebration with Acura of Chattanooga — 1801 Reggie White Blvd, 11 AM
Lower-key alternative if you want something family-oriented with cars, food trucks, and live music. Acura of Chattanooga puts this on annually at their dealership lot. It's free and stroller-friendly, which matters more than you'd think. Details
Heard Around Town
- Chattanooga Pizza Week kicks off Monday. 30+ restaurants across the city are doing $2-3 slices all week. The full list isn't public yet but expect Southside Pizza, Lupi's, and Community Pie to be on it. Worth planning a lunch route now. NoogaToday
- Juvenile and The 400 Degreez Band at The Signal (May 12). Yes, that Juvenile. The "Back That Azz Up" Juvenile. He's playing a Tuesday night at The Signal with a full brass band behind him. Tickets are moving faster than you'd expect for a Tuesday. Tickets
- Clumpies Ice Cream Social (May 17). Annual pre-summer kickoff at Reggie White Blvd with free scoops, live music, and a high probability of children and dogs. Good way to test if Clumpies still makes the best chocolate in the city. (They do.) Info
On the Calendar — May
- May 16 — Danny Gokey, location TBA. Contemporary Christian radio staple with a surprisingly strong live band.
- May 16 — Chattanooga Red Wolves vs. Birmingham Legion FC, CHI Memorial Stadium. USL Cup group stage. Red Wolves haven't found their rhythm this season but cup games get weird.
- May 19 — Jason Mraz, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium. If you haven't seen Mraz live, he's better than his radio singles suggest. Memorial Auditorium shows have been reliably good this spring.
- May 23 — Frazier Festival, 22 Frazier Ave. Annual North Shore street festival. Free, outdoor, get there before noon if you want parking anywhere near Coolidge.
- May 23 — Chattanooga Renaissance Faire, Coolidge Park. If that's your thing, it's a good park for it. If it's not, Coolidge will be crowded anyway because Frazier Festival is the same day.
